Businesses and Consumers Can Estimate Future Energy & Gasoline Bill Increases Under the CLCPA

ALBANY – The Business Council of New York State, Inc., on Tuesday launched a calculator to show the impact of potential future energy assessment cost increases on businesses and households if an aggressive “cap and invest” rule were adopted to meet the Climate and Leadership Community Protection Act (CLCPA) emission-reduction mandates. The calculator allows businesses and consumers to enter their actual or projected energy usage and determine potential costs, based on recent New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) projections.

Without amendments, the CLCPA could result in significant cost increases for business and residential natural gas users. Projections from NYSERDA indicate that meeting the CLCPA’s mandate of a 40% reduction in economy-wide greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 could require a carbon assessment ranging from $120 per ton to $178 per ton, costs that would be passed down to residential and business consumers.

“This calculator allows businesses and everyday energy customers to input their actual energy usage data to see firsthand just how unaffordable this law could become in the future,” said Paul Zuber, Executive Vice President of The Business Council.

The calculator is part of an affordability campaign launched by The Business Council and will be available to the public on the campaign’s website. The website is a public information platform designed to track proposed New York State legislation and evaluate its potential impact on affordability for consumers, workers, and businesses.
