Statement from Cuomo Spokesman on September 10th MAGA Congressional Hearing

The following statement is from Rich Azzopardi, spokesman for Andrew M. Cuomo, the 56th governor of the State of New York, in response to the MAGA Republicans’ announcement of a Sept. 10 congressional hearing, where the former Governor will be appearing voluntarily.
“From the very beginning MAGA Republicans have used this farce of a committee – headed by a foot doctor and including President Trump’s personal physician and a representative with a PhD in Q-Anon – for partisan attacks on people like Dr. Anthony Fauci, who helped get this country through COVID.
“New York has been a prime political target, but despite this master class in gaslighting, the facts speak for themselves. According to a study in the NIH library based on CDC data, New York had a lower nursing home death rate pro rata than all but 11 states. Again, according to the CDC, New York’s overall COVID pro rata death rate went from number 2 in 2020 to lower than all but 20 states in 2021. Remember, New York was hit first and worst by COVID and the other states had months to prepare and learn from our state’s experience.
“This committee has continued to engage in false political attacks blaming New York for nursing home deaths despite the fact that New York was following guidance from Trump’s CDC and CMS. More than a dozen other states – Democratic and Republican – followed the same guidance or as one of those state’s leaders, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, put it, ‘This was federal guidance. This was what everyone was doing.’
“They refuse to look in the mirror at their own anti-science policies that caused hundreds of thousands of unnecessary deaths or call the one witness who is most relevant and was supposed to lead the entire effort: Donald Trump.
“Also, the key question that needs to be answered is still being ignored: ‘Why did 1.2 million Americans die from COVID under Trump, more than any other country, and how do we make sure it never happens again?’ It will be Governor Cuomo’s pleasure to join the committee once again to try to get an answer.
“The American people deserve the truth, and these partisan political games must stop because this is a matter of life and death.”
