Protecting Our Seniors: The Crucial Support of Medicare Advantage

By Nodesia Hernandez | July 29, 2024

Here in Onondaga County, we deeply value the contributions of all our residents. From our youngest to our most senior neighbors, each person plays a crucial role in maintaining the vibrancy of our community. As an Onondaga County Legislator, I’ve had the pleasure of working with and advocating for our diverse constituents – especially those who are among our most vulnerable populations.

Since taking office, it has been a priority of mine to serve our seniors and people with disabilities. For these groups, access to quality health care is essential. Fortunately, programs like Medicare Advantage provide the necessary support for them to sustain their health and well-being.

Medicare Advantage helps maintain and improve beneficiaries’ quality of life. The program provides comprehensive coverage and supplemental benefits, including integrated vision, hearing, and dental care. Additionally, it caps out-of-pocket expenses, giving seniors financial peace of mind. Many seniors in our county and neighboring areas live in rural locations. Medicare Advantage plans offer prescription drug delivery and telehealth services, allowing seniors to consult with their doctors from the comfort of their homes.

Earlier this year, the Medicare agency proposed concerning new cuts to Medicare Advantage. These policy changes could result in fewer benefits, increased out-of-pocket costs, or even fewer choices. Fortunately, New York’s very own Senator Chuck Schumer has vocalized his support for the program, demonstrating his commitment to our seniors. His advocacy has been crucial in ensuring that our seniors continue to receive the coverage they need.

I am proud to call the 17th District home and have been dedicated to uplifting its residents since the day I took office. Medicare Advantage is a shining example of a public-private partnership that ensures seniors receive the care they need. These proposed policy changes are not just numbers on a page; they represent real impacts on the lives of our most vulnerable residents.

I want to thank Senator Schumer for his ongoing support and encourage him to continue advocating for this vital program. By doing so, we ensure that our seniors can access the comprehensive health care they deserve. Let’s work together to protect and preserve Medicare Advantage to maintain and improve quality access to care for the well-being of our community.
