NYSTEC: A trusted partner sharing in government’s important work

By Kevin M. Owens | June 3, 2025

When Governor Hochul announced a $7 billion initiative to make childcare more accessible and affordable for families, we lent our experience implementing complex health and human service benefits systems to accelerate the distribution of grant funds to childcare providers.

We also recognize the importance of making New York the national leader in researching and using artificial intelligence. Our experts help guide our partners on adopting and using new technology tools. And we consider data privacy, suggest risk mitigation safeguards, and help clients balance the use of innovation.

When lawmakers and civic leaders focus on improving population health and reducing healthcare inequities that impact vulnerable populations, we want to be part of the solution for this important, life-saving work. This is why New York State Technology Enterprise Corporation (NYSTEC) hosts the annual Population Health Innovation Summit (PHIS) to bring together experts on trends while exploring innovative solutions, research, and partnerships shaping New York.

This year’s convening is tomorrow at Albany’s Capital Center. It includes a diverse panel of speakers who are driving real-world impact. Every year, we bring together innovators, researchers, community leaders and public health professionals to discuss cutting-edge topics that can affect the health of New Yorkers. This year’s focus is on climate change, the environment and population health.

Our keynote speaker is Sherri Goodman, the Pentagon’s first chief environmental officer, sustainability and national security expert, and author of Threat Multiplier. Her career accomplishments include directing efforts to transform the Department of Defense into a sustainability, climate resilience and advanced energy leader.

NYSTEC is a statewide nonprofit technology consulting company with offices in Albany and Rome, NY, and New York City. Our highly skilled professionals have helped agencies and other government entities with technology modernizations, service transformations, quality assurance, business intelligence, cybersecurity and privacy across industries. We are proud that the work we do is memorable and important for improving the quality of life for New Yorkers from the tip of Long Island to the Canadian border and out past Buffalo.

Since our creation by the Legislature and Governor George Pataki in 1996, NYSTEC has been a deeply trusted partner for state and local government agencies tasked with implementing some of New York’s most important initiatives that touch all aspects of life in our state. They include:

  • Daniels’s Law, which helps ensure that mental health crises are treated as a public health matter as opposed to a police matter.
  • Cybersecurity related to election integrity, personal health information and patient rights, particularly for vulnerable and disabled populations.
  • Improving emergency response by shortening FDNY routes to emergencies, improving radio communications in New York City’s massive Grand Central Terminal expansion.
  • Public health initiatives including strategic planning, data collection and tracking (particularly during COVID) and the state’s Public Health Corps program that is creating a public health workforce that is sustainable for the future.

Everybody knows how far technology has come since NYSTEC was created in 1996. Mobile phones are a fitting example. These technology devices are like walking around with a small computer that has a built-in camera and connectivity to the world. Now you just take out your phone and press video (unless you have Google glasses where you can just push a button on the side of your head).

But some technological developments come with vast implications and need to be handled smartly and correctly, with sensitivity and expertise. Technology is a rapidly evolving field and moving so much faster than policymakers can react to.

State and local agencies bring us in because they know NYSTEC’s track record and trust us to do the job correctly. We can start quickly because we are on a state contract. That saves time and money and creates better value for taxpayers.

Along with doing this work with public agencies, we take very seriously our obligation to be moving the needle in areas of critical public importance.

We invite you to join us tomorrow for PHIS at the Albany Capital Center to learn from leading experts, visionaries and changemakers about climate resilience, clean energy, extreme weather, building healthy communities and sustainable healthcare systems. Panelists will also discuss green technologies and environmental justice.

It is our way of giving back to the community. The event is free event and open to the public. Please register here to attend. We hope to see you there.
