Re: New Polling on Proposed New York Constitution Pipeline
Voters in New York are supportive of using and expanding natural gas in the state across party lines. They also support building the Constitution Pipeline, even after hearing statements reflecting the views of both supporters and opponents of the pipeline. This reflects voters’ desire for an all-of-the-above energy strategy that keeps energy affordable and reliable now while making a steady transition to cleaner sources.
• New York voters have favorable views of natural gas, support using it, and want to build more infrastructure for it in the state. 61% of voters are favorable toward natural gas versus 24% who are unfavorable. Even more, 74% support using natural gas in New York, and more than 3-in-5 support building infrastructure that increases the supply of natural gas in New York (61% support / 24% oppose). There is even double-digit support across party lines:
Do you support or oppose building infrastructure that increases the supply of natural gas in New York?
• New York voters support building the Constitution Pipeline, in a vacuum and after hearing statements from both supporters and opponents. On a cold read, voters support building the pipeline by a wide 25-point margin (46% support / 21% oppose / 32% don’t know). However, after hearing equal, balanced arguments from both supporters and opponents of the pipeline, total support rises to a majority (52% support / 31% oppose / 17% don’t know).
• Voters want to use all energy options currently on the table to keep energy affordable and reliable. 69% say New York should make a steady transition to cleaner energy sources while using all energy options currently available to keep energy affordable and reliable. This is a majority view across party, age, gender, race, education, and geography across the state.
“New Yorkers want an energy policy that keeps their bills affordable and their service reliable while continuing the transition to cleaner energy,” said Luke Martin, a partner at Impact Research, the public opinion research firm that conducted the poll. “This poll shows broad support for natural gas as part of that approach and it is also clear from this data that includes natural gas infrastructure like the Constitution Pipeline. Even after we give voters the strongest arguments from both sides of the debate around the pipeline, a majority of New Yorkers support it.”
Findings are based on the results of a live phone and text-to-web survey conducted by Impact Research from September 9-16, 2026, among N=1004 likely 2026 general election voters in New York. The margin of error is +/- 3.1% for the full sample and is higher for subgroups.
