BREAKING: Albany Politicians Hijack Food Safety from National Experts with A1556E

| June 16, 2025

Albany’s A1556E is infusing politics into our food supply by taking over food safety standards from national experts

A1556E is a deeply flawed, unnecessary bill that undermines decades of science-based federal food safety standards by banning ingredients, many of which have undergone specific testing and are deemed safe by U.S. food safety authorities.

It creates a costly and confusing state-run bureaucracy, and exposes proprietary business information.

New unfunded mandates will raise food prices for consumers, and particularly hurts small businesses and working families.

By overriding scientific consensus, A1556E sets a dangerous precedent for fragmented, state-by-state food regulation.

Its impact on New Yorkers:

  • $35 million in new costs that the state hasn’t budgeted for to subject food to unnecessary and redundant reviews*
  • Threatens the availability of ethnic and culturally important imported foods that rely on long-established formulations and internationally recognized safety standards
  • Causes 1,350,000 pages of previously disclosed research to be re-reviewed that have already been vetted by nationally recognized experts

All of that without improving food safety, confusing consumers, and raising costs for families who can least afford it.

No to 1556E
