AARP NY on Governor Hochul’s State of the State

By AARP NY | January 9, 2024

ALBANY, N.Y. – AARP New York State Director Beth Finkel issued the following statement today on Governor Kathy Hochul’s 2024 State of the State Message:

“Governor Hochul has put forth an ambitious agenda for 2024 that includes initiatives AARP New York supports, including measures to ease the medical debt burden carried by so many New Yorkers, plans to protect consumers from deceptive practices, continued efforts to make energy affordable and proposals to address financial exploitation of older New Yorkers.

“Also, we’re glad to see the Governor acknowledge that too many New Yorkers are struggling with prescription drug costs, and we encourage her and the state Legislature to embrace additional policies to create more access to affordable prescription drugs.

“However, New York’s rapidly increasing aging population requires that the state do more to help older adults age in their communities while providing support to overburdened family caregivers. Additionally, older adults, and all New Yorkers, should be able to benefit from data matching to connect with programs for which they are eligible.”

“We hope the Governor will address these topics in her upcoming state budget proposal, and we look forward to working with her and the state Legislature to ensure the issues important to New Yorkers 50 and over are addressed in the coming months.”
