New York Women in Law Enforcement denounces accusations or judgment that blames the attempted assassination of President Trump on the gender of the U.S. Secret Service’s director, Kimberly Cheatle
The New York Women in Law Enforcement denounces any accusations or judgment that blames the attempted assassination of President Trump on the gender of the U.S. Secret Service’s director, Kimberly Cheatle. These types of accusations are reckless, dangerous and undermine the fair and equal process that all police officers go through to be certified as a Law Enforcement Officer. The investigation into the incident has just begun and we urge everyone to be patient with the process and to not throw blame around on non-factual information.
James Joseph Rowley was in charge of the U.S. Secret Service when John F. Kennedy was assassinated. He remained in his position for another ten years after the completed assassination. Nowhere in the history of that incident has anyone blamed Kennedy’s death on the fact that Rowley was a male.
The purpose of organizations like the New York Women in Law Enforcement is to strengthen the law enforcement community by promoting diversity through education, training and the development of leadership skills. Our goal is to be an advocate for women working in the field of law enforcement to be sure that they are being provided the same opportunities as male officers. We have never asked any agency to hire or promote anyone on the basis of gender, nor have we asked any agency to lower their standards for females.
It is very disheartening to hear derogatory comments being made for political gain and to see what progress we have made be set back by it. The members of the New York Women in Law Enforcement and women in Law Enforcement throughout the country put their lives on the line every day to keep their communities safe. They do the same job as their male counterparts and they deserve the same respect.
Meredith L. Kaiser is President of New York Women In Law Enforcement.
